It is important to know that Amazon will not act as the Importer Of Record for your FBA inventory.
Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) allows you to store your products in any one of Amazon’s fulfilment centres, located across the globe. Amazon will pick, pack, ship, and provide customer service for these products. Using FBA allows you to reach more customers and expand into new countries.
However, Amazon will not help with the risk-intensive processes, such as compliance and Importer Of Record(IOR) duties.
Amazon has stated that they will not act as an IOR for FBA inventory imported into any country, regardless of the shipment value or size. Therefore, anyone wanting to send goods to a foreign Amazon fulfilment centre needs to appoint an Importer of Record.
Failing to comply with any import compliance rules will result in a failed shipment – your goods may be seized, returned to their origin, or disposed of, all at your own cost.
What are the responsibilities of Importer Of Record?
Importer of Record (IOR) is a trading entity or foreign tax registration in the destination country. It involves taking on a whole bunch of responsibilities that must be completed in a very specific way for every shipment. The IOR must ensure that each shipment complies with local laws and regulations, file all declarations, and make payments for the associated fees, import duties, and taxes.
According to local laws and regulations, the IOR can be audited for any transactions that they have gone down for. Audit risk is a long-term consideration as customs officers can audit an IOR for a period of up to 7 years after the import is complete.
