Lithium Metal Batteries Shipping Guide

This page provides the information you need for sending and importing lithium metal batteries safely and in compliance with different carriers.

Lithium metal batteries acceptance rules:

  1. It must be contained in or packed with the equipment
  2. Lithium content < 2g
  3. Combined net weight of all lithium batteries per package < 5 kg

If above conditions are all met, your package does not need to be shipped as fully regulated Dangerous Goods and can be accepted by specific carriers.

A. Batteries or cells packed with equipment

How to calculate lithium metal content?

Ah per cell x 0.3g x Number of cells

For example, if the battery you wish to ship is rated at 2,500 mAh per cell and contains six cells:

    •  Divide 2,500 mAh by 1,000 to get the rating in ampere hours (Ah):
      2,500 mAh ÷ 1,000 = 2.5 Ah
    • Multiple the Ah by 0.3 g to determine the amount of lithium in each cell:
      2.5 x 0.3g = 0.75 grams of lithium in each cell
    • Multiply the amount of lithium in each cell by the number of cells in each battery:
      0.75 grams/cell x 6 = 4.5 grams of lithium in the battery

Refer to the IATA regulations for guidance on shipping batteries.
